Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts Endorses Democrat Shelley Mayer
WESTCHESTER, N.Y. - Democrat Shelley Mayer has received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts (PPESA) in her race for State Senate. In their endorsement, the group praised Mayer's integrity and lifetime of advocacy for women.
"Endorsing Shelley Mayer for State Senate is a no-brainer. From her time defending women's rights in the Attorney General's office, to her leadership role in the legislature fighting for women's access to health care and standing up against sexual harassment, Shelley is exactly the kind of woman we need to shake things up in Albany. There is no question that Shelley Mayer has a strong record of supporting women and speaking out on our issues. We stand 100% with Shelley," said PPESA CEO Robin Chappelle Golston.
"Women are driving the change that our country needs right now, so it's an honor to have earned the support of Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts. With Washington attacking women's rights at every turn, our state government must be the firewall that protects women's access to health care. With a Democratic majority in the Senate, we can finally pass the Reproductive Health Act, which has been blocked by Senate Republicans for far too long," said Mayer.
Mayer has been a fierce advocate for women's rights and women's health resources throughout her career. While working as an Assistant Attorney General, Mayer prosecuted extreme anti-choice activists who sought to harass and intimidate women and doctors, and she worked to protect women, doctors, and clinics from violence and the illegal tactics of Operation Rescue. During her time in the Assembly, she has been the co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act and the Reproductive Health Act, both of which have died in the Republican Senate. Mayer also co-sponsors legislation to help victims of human trafficking and protect women from pregnancy discrimination.
Her campaign has also been endorsed by the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion PAC (WCLA PAC), the Westchester Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
PPESA advocates for public policies that protect and support sexual and reproductive health, services, rights, and justice. It was formed in January 2017 by the union of Family Planning Advocates of New York State and Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York.
Mayer continues to build a diverse coalition of supporters. With its endorsement of Mayer, PPESA joins Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, TWU Local 100, Indivisible Westchester, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, AFL-CIO, 32BJ SEIU, RWDSU, CWA, Westchester-based Teamsters Local 456, New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association, the New York State Pipe Trades Association, Building and Construction Trades Council of Westchester and Putnam Counties, the Yonkers PBA, NYSNA, Fighting for Children PAC, and Tenants PAC. The special election will be held on April 24th.
